Ghanaian wood mask, 'Person from Avedzi' (Ghana)

pin

This lavishly detailed mask by Ralph Kwasi Agudze is a study in symmetry. Sculpted of naturally dried sese wood, it represents a wise elder; embellishments of textured brass and copper imply his royal status. The warm wood is finished in dark tan and mansion polish and the mask stands on its own. Authentic and beautiful, this is a tribal mask from the area of Avedzi, a small town in Ghana's Volta Region. Driven by a passion for the arts since childhood, Agudze learned to carve in a few short months. The skilled artisan intuitively creates each work as a testimony to West African culture.
